Biały JarBiały Jar is a nivation basin, moulded by firns - massive layers of hardened snow, sog. Firne. Up to the present day huge masses of snow pile up during the winters. The snow gets blown up from the plains below the Snezka and causes dangerous avalanches. On March, 30th 1968 a group of 19 tourists lost their lives in one single avalanche measuring 600 m in length, 80 m width and 12 m thickness. The memorial erected at this place to remeber the victims of thie tragedy, was again destroyed by an avalanche in 1974, leaving only the pedestal. |
