Obří důl (Giant’s Pit)
The mighty valley between Sněžka and Pec pod Sněžkou, is a nature reservation with precious flora. Already in the 16. century herb gatherers would come here to pick "miraculous" herbs and plants (especially during midsummer night.
U-shaped geological formations like these originate from ice-age glacial activity. The Aupa glacier, which was mainly responsible for the developement once was up to 4 km in long, 801 m in width and up to 100 m thick. When the glacier finally dissapeared it left three moraines.
The way up to the Snezka passes the upper and lower Aupa waterfalls and the small and the large Aupa pits. Snow gathering at their borders cause avalanches that tumble down the valley.
Since the 15. century the town of Obří důl was well known for the mining of non-ferrous metal that reached its peak at the beginning of the 19. century. Pec pod Sněžkou
